CNG Vehicle Conversions: A Call for Stringent Oversight Over Some Safety Concerns

As Nigeria continues its push towards adopting Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cleaner and more affordable fuel source, several safety concerns have emerged. These concerns stem primarily from improper conversions, where unqualified installers use substandard equipment, most notably LPG tanks, which are not designed for the high-pressure demands of CNG systems.

One recent incident in Nigeria showcased this danger when an LPG tank, designed to handle only 2-3 bars of pressure, was mistakenly installed in place of a CNG tank, which must withstand up to 200 bars of pressure. This critical error, as highlighted by reports, underscores the risks associated with uncertified installations

The improper use of LPG tanks in CNG conversions has been linked to accidents, as such tanks cannot safely contain the high pressure needed for CNG, leading to potential explosions or leaks

Globally, incidents similar to those in Nigeria have been reported. In India, for example, multiple accidents have occurred due to improper installations or substandard materials used in vehicle conversions. In these cases, uncertified installers and poorly maintained equipment have often been to blame. These incidents have drawn attention to the need for strict regulations and regular inspections to ensure safety.

Investigations into such incidents consistently highlight the importance of adhering to safety standards. CNG cylinders, which are the most critical components in conversions, must be inspected every three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. The materials used, ranging from steel to advanced carbon fiber composites, must meet the specifications for high-pressure gas storage.

In Nigeria, organizations such as the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and other regulatory bodies are being urged to step up oversight to prevent further incidents. As the country moves forward with its CNG initiatives, stringent checks and certifications will be crucial in ensuring the safety of both installers and end-users

These incidents serve as stark reminders that while the shift to cleaner energy is vital, the path to it must be paved with responsibility, safety, and regulation.
